Background of the study
Media bias significantly influences public perceptions of language and culture. In Nigerian news outlets, the representation of the Hausa language is often affected by political and commercial interests, which may lead to biased coverage. In Kano, for example, Hausa language news segments may be selectively edited to emphasize certain political narratives or cultural stereotypes (Bello, 2023). This bias can distort the true linguistic and cultural identity of the Hausa people. Journalistic practices, combined with economic pressures and political affiliations, contribute to an uneven representation that impacts public trust and the preservation of linguistic heritage. This study investigates the extent of media bias in the representation of the Hausa language by analyzing news broadcasts, print media, and online articles. Through content analysis and interviews with media professionals, the research aims to identify the patterns of bias and propose measures for more balanced reporting, thereby ensuring a fair representation of the Hausa language and its cultural significance (Garba, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Media bias in Nigerian news outlets often leads to a distorted representation of the Hausa language, compromising its cultural integrity and public perception (Bello, 2023). Selective editing and ideological slants result in inconsistent portrayal of Hausa language content, undermining its role in reflecting authentic cultural values (Garba, 2024). This study seeks to identify the root causes of such bias and its effects on public discourse, with the aim of developing recommendations to promote balanced media representation.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze media bias in Hausa language news.
  2. To identify factors contributing to biased reporting.
  3. To propose strategies for balanced media representation.

Research questions:

  1. How is Hausa language represented in Nigerian news outlets?
  2. What factors contribute to media bias?
  3. How can balanced reporting be achieved?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the impact of media bias on the representation of the Hausa language, providing guidance for media reform and cultural preservation. The findings will assist news organizations and policymakers in improving journalistic standards (Bello, 2023; Garba, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Hausa language representation in Nigerian news outlets; does not cover other media.

Definitions of terms:

  • Media bias: The presence of prejudice in news reporting.
  • Representation: The portrayal of language and culture.
  • Hausa language: The language spoken by the Hausa people.
